SOME ANNOUNCEMENTS:
CHRIS BRADFORD announced that the next 5280 District Leadership Breakfast is scheduled for Tuesday morning, October 12th at the LAX Marriott. Registration begins at 7:00 AM, and the breakfast begins at 7:15 AM. Please contact CHRIS if you plan to attend.
SHANE WAARBROEK announced that the September 23rd Club meeting would be a Club Assembly focusing on membership issues.
DON NELSON announced that the WVRC Family Picnic at the SISKEL Residence is September 19th.
PP STEVE DAY announced that raffle tickets and dinner tickets are still available for the 20th Annual Rotary District 5280 Foundation Celebration Paul Harris Dinner, on November 6, 2004, at the Long Beach Convention Center. Please send in your dinner reservations, and see PP STEVE DAY for additional raffle tickets.
RALPH BEASOM reported that BRUCE ROLF is still at Berkeley East in room 314A, and can be reached at (310) 745-5901.
RUDY’S WORLD - LILLIAN KLIEWER and DON PARK could not identify the "Rudy’s World" picture posted on the Web site. RO SHAW correctly identified the picture as the swans at the Bel-Air Hotel. PP HOWIE HENKES correctly identified the addition to the picture (a monkey in the left corner), to which President RUDY exercised his presidential power to remove.
President RUDY announced that his Ethics Kaffeeklatch is September 11th at the Farmer’s Market Community Room; the 5280 District Family Picnic is September 18th at Chevron Park in El Segundo from 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM (tickets may be purchased from MIKE GINTZ); and the 5280 District Golf Tournament on Monday, September 27th at the California Country Club.
President RUDY also announced that, beginning today, each meeting will end with a toast, and CATHY REZOS will act as "Toastmistress."
PP BOB WESSLING gave us an update on what’s happening at his alma mater, DePauw University.
PP PETER MORE reported on his recent trip to Asia and to the Hong Club Rotary Club. Lunch at the Hong Kong Rotary Club is $250 (Hong Kong Dollars)! He also presented HENRY TSANG with a banner from the Hong Kong Rotary Club, at which he is a Past President.
PP PETER MORE then introduced our Speaker, PAUL WHITEHEAD (no relation to our own PP DAVE WHITEHEAD). PAUL WHITEHEAD is a 7th grade English teacher in Koreatown, and running as the Republican candidate for Congress in the 36th Congressional District, serving Los Angeles and San Pedro. His opponent is Congresswoman JANE HARMAN. Mr. WHITEHEAD sees himself as a regular guy running for Congress against a much richer and better organized Democratic party candidate. He is not a conservative, but rather an independent thinker who’s for smaller government, tax credits for home schooling, health care reform, and stopping illegal immigration.
CATHY REZOS closed the meeting with a brief toast in remembrance of September 11, 2001.
