“Our Year Ahead”
|
June is Rotary Fellowship Month.
Our greeters were PPs Gordon Fell
and Ron Lyster.
President Ed Jackson led the
Pledge.
Brian Whitney gave the Invocation:
“We cannot merely pray to you, O
God, to end war, for we know that
you have made the world in a way
that we must find our own path to
peace within ourselves and with our
neighbors.
“We cannot merely pray to you, O
God, to end starvation, for you have
already given us the resources with
which to feed the entire world, if
we would only use them wisely.
“We cannot merely pray to you, O God
to root out prejudice, for you have
already given us eyes with which to
see the good in others, if we would
only use them rightly.
“We cannot merely pray to you, O
God, to end despair, for you have
already given us the power to clear
away slums and to give Hope, if we
would only use our power justly.
“We cannot merely pray to you, O
God, to end disease, for you have
already given us great minds with
which to search out curers and
healing, if we would only use them
constructively.
“Therefore we pray to you instead, O
God, for strength, determination,
and will power, to do instead of to
pray, to become instead of merely to
wish, for your sake and for ours,
speedily and soon, that our land and
our world may be safe, and that our
lives may be blessed.
“May the words that we pray and the
deeds that we do be acceptable to
you.”
Great job, Brian!
There were no visiting Rotarians or
guests of Rotarians, the word is
out.
Head Table:
PP Ron Lyster, who makes our website
sparkle uniquely with his MIT
standards!
Past District Governor Bill
Goodwyn, who helped energize the
club with the support of the past
presidents association, an
innovative concept in Rotary; PP and
current Assistant Governor Gordon
Fell, who seems to have a busier
Rotary schedule now than before; and
President Ed Jackson.
We are completing our first year of
the Rotary International Pilot
Program, innovative and flexible
(category), presented to only 200
out of 3400 clubs world-wide.
With the purpose of providing
leadership and solutions for the
challenges facing Rotarians
worldwide, these are a few of our
actions:
We begin by focusing on developing
Rotary awareness among our young
professionals in the area.
Rotary Impact, our networking
group for young professionals, is
helping to bridge the gap between
Rotaract and Rotary.
Also, we now offer corporate and
associate memberships.
We are continuing to implement the
pilot program, and you will hear
more in the future.
But we’ve also found out that
most things we do, have done or will
do really don’t need a pilot program
to develop.
Our bylaws offer such a high
standard, that just following that
alone would make every club
successful.
PP and fourth quarter program chair
Michael Newman introduced our
speaker, Michael Quill, Baykeeper
Outreach Coordinator, Santa Monica
Bay Keeper.
Michael joined Baykeeper in
2008 as a diver in the Kelp
Monitoring and Restoration Project.
Colby and Stacie Smith often
go diving with him.
Michael participates in Baykeeper’s
community outreach, LightHawk and
DrainWatch programs.
While at Antioch University,
he developed a Baykeeper Urban
Community Environment Internship.
His ongoing studies at
Pacifica Graduate Institute in Depth
Psychology are focused on Community,
Liberation and Ecopsychology.
Michael’s current role as a
Baykeeper Outreach Coordinator
focuses on building bridges between
our community’s diverse
stakeholders.
If you’re interested in finding out
more about marine protected areas,
please give Michael a call; he will
gladly share his mission with you.
