Special Joint Meeting with Santa Monica Rotary Club
-YYE Aly ShojiThe Riviera Country Club Santa Monica Rotary Club president Judy Neveu opened the program at our annual joint meeting at the Riviera Country Club. It was a beautiful day and the barbecue buffet was set out on the veranda overlooking the golf course. WVRC showed up 33 members strong, but was somewhat overpowered by at least 75 Santa Monica attendees. Our own PDG Bill Goodwyn delivered the invocation and pres Dwight was given two minutes to address the crowd. He noted that on May 10, 1773, the British Parliament passed the infamous Tea Act which led to the Revolutionary War. 65 years later, on May 10 again, John Wilkes Booth was born. We did not notice any such disasters during our meeting. We congratulated the SMRC for their strong showing at the District Conference Awards, where we enjoyed similar success. President Judy made a strong impression by inducting four members into their club that day. Their usual announcements sounded a lot like our own. The strain of jamming so many items into the one hour meeting became apparent when Jimmy Buffet's "Margaritaville" concluded in 45 unrecognizable seconds. We may need to provide Maestro Lenny Friedman's services at our next joint meeting. This haste, however, did provide our well-informed speaker enough time to educate us about the current state of our oceans. Dr. Garen Baghdasarian, educated at UCLA, is a professor of marine biology at Santa Monica College and came armed with some startling graphics and photos about the 70% of our world that is the oceans. As if we weren't worried enough about global and ocean warming, he showed us some alarming evidence of massive pollution, particularly from waste plastic, that is changing and destroying ocean life. As good-intentioned as our cleanup efforts have been, they have but small effect on this build-up of our toxic garbage. A serious wake-up call for most of us, I'm sure, but one crisis at a time. It was a sunny Friday afternoon at the Riviera and the weekend lay before us. |
