Our speaker today is John Morris, Deputy DA for Los Angeles
and a former criminal prosecutor. He started off informing
us that crime is not going down - that's "cooking the
books," however homicide is going down. In lieu of today's
realities, he wanted to share: How to avoid becoming a
victim of healthcare fraud. LA is at the height of this
crime including other not so illustrious cities as Miami and
Detroit! In 2011, an estimated $60B in healthcare fraud
occurred in the US, $6B alone in CA. Be aware your medical
info can be sent overseas and if you consider even 10% of
$60B that is a motivating profit for criminals.
Workers compensation fraud can impact everyone - every
contractor must have a license and confirm it is valid (hand
out provided by speaker) CSLB
License and Insurance contact
information Phone (800) 321-CSLB.
He walked us through how Medical fraud is limited really
only by criminals' imaginations - and reminded us there is
NO honor among thieves which is how MediCal is set-up (on
the honor system). It's also why our insurance rates are
going up. Some suggested steps:
- Look at your Explanation
of benefits to confirm the procedure you are being
billed for is correct. If you see something questionable
can contact insurer
- The misuse of personal
info name, DOB, SS # thieves will go through your trash
for this info ESP drug addicts Shred EVERYTHING and use
the right kind the cross cut kind (sounds familiar from
another recent presenter Sherry DeWayne?)
- Mail issues - do not mail
taxes from home or any mail with any personal info
- Computers -- update your
systems, use random passwords, firewalls,
- Don't keep your social
security card on you!
- Or medical record #s, SS,
or passwords, and certainly don't keep them on smart
phone! #1 thing stolen.
- If you receive an
unsolicited phone call from "one of your insurance
providers" do not give out any info - they should have
all of it
- Don't buy infomercial or
products on tv (Aly!) I do love these late night
products for $19.99!
- If you are a victim of
fraud often times the victim feels embarrassed but must
contact insurer AND police. The DA office helps people
and to stop fraud our speaker has decided to run for the
LA County Assessor next term.
Honest people and Government working for us!
