"Craft Talk"

Dick Thompson and Jim Crane greeted everyone on our final meeting of the year.

President Mark Rogo welcomed everyone to the friendly Westwood Village Rotary.

PP Steve Day led us in our pledge and Tom Barron provided our invocation.

Steve Day returned to the podium to share some Paul Harris Foundation announcements and thank members such as Don Park.

Mark Rogo auctioned off Alaska Airlines tickets the WVRC received from Angel Flight.  Your PE, Aly Shoji, barely beat out Brian Whitney (but she needed a Christmas present for her husband) and was thinking of Sean McMillan and how much he loved volunteering for Angel Flight.  $650 will go to the WVRC and I'll let you know where we go (hopefully he takes me!)

Mark gave a very touching tribute to our DG Andy Anderson.  His service will be on Jan. 2  We are thinking of Pat and their family and sending our love and prayers.

Don  Nelson was fined $100 for the 6th generation of Adelaides born into their family - congratulations!  Our dear President then went and fined himself for emailing the WRONG Jim Crane this entire term!  Finally the recipient emailed Mark back and told him to stop with all the Rotary emails already lol

Mark commenced with the gift exchange and started with rotating the gifts clockwise three people. Then allowing the oldest member (in age) to pick whatever gift they wanted.  Next, the person who was the member the longest got to then choose whatever present they wanted.  They the paper began to fly...

Our esteemed judges today were:  Our very own members Jack Paul (recently recovered from an accident - glad you are OK, Jack!) Our own world traveler, Leah Vriesman, and UCLA's finest Police Chief, Jim Herren.

Each table went around and shared what they opened and our judges made quick notes by categories which our president had pre-determined.

Nominees for the most disgusting gift were:
a)     The Coroner's fluid cup  b)   bundt cakes    c) The partially eaten and who knows how old bunny cupcake (winner)

Nomineee for the most usable gift were:
a)     Toiletries from I believe a  Comfort Inn or some swank hotel ;)  b) an actual meat grinder  c)  a flat tire fix kit

Nominees for most likely to come from the minds of Eric Loberg and Elliott Turner were:
a)     The Viagra tie (PP Ed Jackson advised he not wear for more than four hours and PP Gordon Fell added he would end up with a stiff neck.  Mark Block said he need to tie one on ha ha)  b)  "On the rocks" glasses  c) an actual white elephant  I'm sure you can guess the winner.

After THAT, President Mark expected us to actually work!  OK, we had a club assembly- not too bad.  VP Colby Smith started things off by announcing the venue options our club had considered and with all due considerations for the time being the Faculty Center is still our WVRC's best option in terms of long term lease and cost/benefit to our members.

The Chairman of the Nominating Committee, PP Ed Gauld, shared he led a vote on a recommended slate but Jack Paul came to the rescue with an appropriate hat before he made the announcement...Your nominating committee voted on the following officers for the WVRC 2014-2015 fiscal year.
President                 Aly Shoji
President-Elect         Dr. Colby Smith
Vice President          Marsha Hunt
Secretary                Diane Good
Treasurer                Terry M. White

Ed thanked his committee and congratulated the club on an excellent slate of incoming officers for our club.

President Mark asked the club for feedback at this time so he can adjust for his second term.  Phil Gabriel likes hands on projects, Don Nelson wants our banner cleaned up (as do a few others!) members enjoyed the evening social at Hillcrest (the next one is March 5!) members also expressed appreciation for good speakers, unbiased programs, UCLA faculty.

Don't forget our first meeting back is Jan. 9 and it will feature one of our Rotary Impact members, Matthew Guillory, and his craft talk along with Hump Day!
