President Mark welcomed everyone to the friendly Westwood Village Rotary Club.

PE Aly Shoji led us in the pledge.  Paul Marrone (Tony's son) led us in a special Invocation/moment of silence in honor of his father and our past Club member.

Health and Welfare:
  • Peter's sister Margaret Moore Chi passed away on Jan 8, and his mother is now in the Ronald Reagan/UCLA Hospital.  We are sending your family condolences and good wishes.
  • Jack Paul will be back soon!  He is much better from his car accident and extensive rehab.
Visiting Rotarians included: Jim Snee From the Rotary Club in Santa Fe New Mexico and our honorary member, AG Linton Morgan from Inglewood Rotary Club. Colby's lovely wife, Stacy visited with us today, Jonathan Kantor from our newly formed Rotary Impact group (and also hosted the last Impact mtg at his office, thank you!)  Mavis Yao was a special guest to our Club today and then it is always so nice to have Shirley More, Pat Anderson, and Sally Phillips join us for lunch.

No song or merchant minute this week, and lucky for us, it was a whirlwind meeting!

PP Steve Scherer welcomed us to Investment Advisors Day

The first one was back on Dec 14, 1989 24 years ago. Andy Anderson was the club's President and Jim Sumner led this program.  The Dow then was at 2700.  Gold was $408 ounce

The WVRC seemed to have a 3 year hiatus from this program since 2011.  So PP Steve Scherer framed today's talk to a timeframe that started with  the 2008 meltdown, the last year of the Bush administration, and the last two years of Obama's first term and first year of second term for this programs analysis.
Unfortunately there was a lot of data given that I was not able to capture and have asked to have delivered through the Windmill but have yet to receive per this "publishing."

Our esteemed panelists today including PP Steve Scherer were, Youth Chair Jim Crane, PP Dwight Heikkila, and BOD Brian Whitney.

Jim shared we saw an increase in dividends because NY Life did well in equities .  He suggested Exxon Mobil b/c he was asked to provide an energy stock. Jim also suggested our members take the online quiz on Exxon's website. He predicts the DOW will increase by 10% as the demand for energy will surpass our population growth.

Dwight's estimates are Bullish for the DOW & S&P
Predictions for 12/31/2014:
1-year Treasury: up 15%
10-yr Treasury: up to 3.4%
S & P 500: 2200 by end of year
Dow Jones Industrials: ending the year at 19700
Energy sector stock choice: Core Labs (CLB)

Brian Whitney is an asset allocator and big picture guy instead of individual stocks, but he discussed the Treasury Bubble and chose TransOcean b/c it is beaten down.  He prefers to look at "straw hats" in Jan $47.49/share

Steve recommended Uranium Energy Corportation UEC
$1.70 /share. And ended our program with the sound advice to, "Buy Low and sell high!"
